Berlin, back in the past of Germany

Updated: Sep 25, 2021

Berlin is the capital of Germany. Being a big and historical city, it is visited every day by thousands of toursits. However, it is not as typical as Rome or Paris and its main places of interest are more spread around the city. That's why I thought it might be helpful for you to discover some locations of Berlin that have been special during my trip there.

View of the city from the Reichtag

I have been to Berlin with my best friend Iris, during September 2018. We stayed five days in the capital, plus we did an extra trip of 2 days to Dresden, at two hours by bus from there. Berlin is full of things to do, so if you feel you would like to explore it perfectly I guess six or seven days would be perfect. Here are some of the things we saw during our stay.

Banhoff Zoo Railway Station

Berlin Bahnhof Zoo, location of the Movie

The city of Berlin is the location of the famous book Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, the story of a young girl who was addicted to heroin in the 80s. After having read the book and seen the movies, Iris and I took the occasion of visiting the places in which some scenes were recorded. Unfortunately, this train station is still a place where homeless people go, even though the situation is better than a few years ago during the time of heroine addiction in Europe.

Charlottenburg Palace

Even though Berlin could seem an extremely modern city, it also has some classical architecture. This Palace is located in Charlottenburg district, pretty central to the city. It was built at the end of 17th century in a baroque and rococo style. It is really worth a visit!

The Glass Dome

The Reichtag is the building in Berlin that hosts the German Parliament. Supposed to be built after the unification of Germany, from the Holy Roman Empire in 1871, its works started some decades after due needs of purchasing the property from the Prussians. It is built in a Neo-Baroque style, following the design of the Memorial Hall of Philadelphia.

This particularity of the building is the cupola made by steel and glass, that is located on the centre of its roof. You can visit the cupola for free booking in advance, to enjoy a great experience and an amazing view of the city!

Berlin wall

After the end of the Second World War, Germany was divided between USA, France and the Soviet Union. Berlin was then divided in two, one part being Democratic with the Western Block and the other Socialist with the East. Berlin's wall stood up until 1990 when following the opening of the borders. The episode marked the beginnning of the end of the Cold War.

Berlin Wall

Even though the wall was torn down in 1990, some parts of it are still up nowadays. You can go to see them on the East Side Gallery, close to the station of Warshauer Strasse. During the time of the division, the wall became a space for expressing street art: this famous graffiti painting represents Leonid Brejnev and Eric Honecker who were leaders in 1979. They celebrated the agreement between the East Germany with the Soviet Union with a kiss.

Oktoberfest in Alexanderplatz One of the most famous and loved German experiences is Oktoberfest. This beer celebration is annually held in the city of Munich, Bavaria during the end of the month of September. Most of you might not know that the event is also led in other cities of Germany, one of them in Berlin in Alexanderplatz. Iris and I happened to be there in the exact time when it started, so we had an extremely fun experience is a place that is much less crowded and expensive than Munich!
