Colombia, el Encanto de South America

Colombia, a country known for its diverse landscapes and vibrant culture, is home to some of the most beautiful and unique destinations in South America. Three places, in particular, stand out for their charm and diversity: Cartagena, Valle del Cocora, and Medellín. Each offers something special, from colonial architecture and coastal beauty to lush green valleys and a thriving urban scene. Here’s a closer look at these captivating destinations.

Cartagena

Cartagena, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a city brimming with history, culture, and charm. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its well-preserved colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and colorful buildings. The historic walled city, with its vibrant plazas and charming cafes, feels like a step back in time, offering visitors the chance to wander through centuries of history.

I have been to Cartagena for the first time in 2022 by myself and I brought in 2024 my parents to see the beauty of this Caribbean paradise. We've been to Playa Blanca and see the bluminescent plancton that happens every day only in a very few spots of the world!

Valle del Cocora and Salento

Nestled in the heart of the Colombian coffee region, Valle del Cocora is one of the country’s most stunning natural landscapes. This lush valley, famous for its towering wax palms, the national tree of Colombia, provides a picture-perfect setting for outdoor adventures. The palms, some reaching over 200 feet, create a surreal and awe-inspiring sight.

In this place the nature reigns completely as is a protected area and you can walk on the hill and hike many kilometres to find the best views. A foggy day is pretty common to experience in this area. This palm species can grow to a height of 45m - and is the tallest recorded monocot in the world.

Hiking through Valle del Cocora is an unforgettable experience. The trek takes visitors through dense cloud forests, past flowing rivers, and through fields where the sky is filled with towering palms. The Cocora Valley Loop, a 5-6 hour hike, is a popular trail that offers the best views of this spectacular landscape. Along the way, hikers may encounter horses, cattle, and incredible biodiversity, making it a true escape into nature.

The nearby town of Salento is a perfect base for exploring the valley. Known for its colorful streets, quaint atmosphere, and coffee farms, Salento offers a peaceful retreat after a day of hiking in the stunning valley.

Medellin

Once known for its turbulent past, Medellín has transformed into a dynamic and innovative city. Often called the "City of Eternal Spring" because of its perfect weather, Medellín offers a blend of modernity and tradition, with a strong emphasis on culture and innovation.

The Comuna 13 neighborhood, once considered one of the most dangerous in the country, is now a symbol of transformation, known for its vibrant street art, local markets, and community-led initiatives. Here we were visiting Plaza Botero, the centre of Medellin, that conserve vegetation and but is also higly urbanised.

Medellín is also home to a thriving nightlife and cultural scene. The city boasts a variety of museums, such as the Museo de Antioquia, and hosts festivals like the Feria de las Flores, a flower festival that celebrates Medellín’s rich heritage. Whether you’re exploring its parks, enjoying its nightlife, or simply soaking in the perfect weather, Medellín offers a modern yet authentic Colombian experience.
