Luxembourg, how to respect the environment

Updated: Jul 17, 2020

Luxemburg is a little country in the middle of Europe, bordered with France, Germany and Belgium. Its official name is Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which makes it the world’s only remaining sovereign grand duchy, governed by the Grand Duche Henri. Luxembourg is also one of the official capital of the European Union, and seat of the European Court of Justice. However, it is not a classic touristic destination.

“What are you going to do in Luxembourg?” a lot of people kept asking me before leaving. Here it is my answer..

I visited Luxemburg during summer, with my best friend Iris. We decided to visit this little country because of our shared passion for exploring hidden places which keep their authentic and hidden culture.

We reached the capital, Luxembourg City, with a Ryanair flight an easly morning of august. The airport is very small and right at the exit there is a tramway driving to the city center. The ticket costs 2 euros and takes around 15 minutes. The tramway stops in several places, but I would advise for a perfect visiting starting point to descend in Badanstalt. From there it is possible to visit the most beautiful places at a walkable distance.

We had breakfast with a Rhubarb cake and muffin, in a cosy coffee of the city center, as a good charge for starting vising the UNESCO heritage of the city.

Luxemburg is a multi-lingual country, this means that the official languages are actually three: Luxemburguish, spoken only by people who are born there, German studied at school, and French, used for most of the administrative tasks. Having lived in France for three years, I felt at first like home, being the traditions and the food at first slightly similar.

Ponthe Adolphe

Luxembourg is the only place in  the world sovereigned by a grand duchy. Named after the Grand Duke Adolphe, who reigned Luxembourg from 1890 until 1905, this bridge is now a main sightseeing attraction and symbol of Luxembourg’s independence. From this point are visitble the gardens of Petrusse and the flags of Luxembourg and the European Union.

This bridge is used as a link to go by car, bycicle or foot from Ville Haute, the upper part of the city Heritage of Unesco to the neighbourhood Gare.

National Museum of History and Art

This engaging museum has free entrance and is full of iconic and important objects belonging to Luxembourg history. You will find a huge range of items such as tools, coins, weapons, historical documents, and photographs.

In the last room of the museum there are some particolar clothes that you can use for dressing up like Medieval times and a camera that will print your best photographs!

Respect of Environment

Luxembourg City is full of little shops and cozy restaurants, which make it very nice to explore, but what I found very special and unique about this place is that it is one of the cleanest city I have ever seen.

This noticeable detail make it a very pleasant place comparing to other cities of the world where people throw garbage in the streets. Luxembourg’s inhabitants really respect the place where they live and the government invest money to keep the streets always like that. It is also an attitude of the people, however, who react bad if they see somebody throwing rubbish on the floor.

We should all take example from them, who would like to be the first to dirt a place if nobody does it?

Also, Government acts in a way that involves people to respect the environment in a funny way. Look for example at this cigarette trash, it asks a question about Corals and encourage people to answer putting thier cigarette in the first or second box.

What are corals? Plants or Animals?

Isn't this such a brilliant idea? Let me know what you think about Luxembourg in the comments and if you would like to visit it someday!
